Watching paint dry

Well, I have not been totally idle for the last little while.  Some yard work and a few odd tiny jobs on the shop have been done.  I finally went and bought some 1/2" exterior plywood for the soffit.

I first measured out what I needed and I also marked where all the rafters come over the walls.

Then I swung the saw into the middle of the shop and put in a new zero clearance insert I made along with a micro splitter.

It turns out the first piece can use the full 8' length, so I just ripped the ply to 11 1/2" to fit.  I checked at the local hardware store and found some opaque stain in the mistint section for 1/2 price.  I guess that answers the question on trim colour.

When I get a large can of paint that I will be dispensing from more than once, I like to put a few holes in the rim so the paint will drip back into the can after pouring.  It saves the mess that gets into the groove where the lid goes.

The colour is an off white/cream and after setting up a work area I started rolling it on.

It is an oil based stain that calls for 24 hours between coats, so after not much work I have to wait.  I will be putting a second coat on today and that will be another short day of work.

The job takes up a lot of space, but easier to do it first and then put it up than trying to do it overhead and not get it on anything else.  I will be getting some vents to put in it after it is up though.  Just to get the spacing nice.

It ought to look nice and I will use the same stuff for the door and window trim.  If I have enough left over, it may to the ceiling inside too!  I haven't made up my mind yet.

So, slow progress, but we are taking it easy (for a change) and getting things done.

Still kicking

I have not been posting much, but that is because I have not been doing much.   A few little details here and there but for the most part my time has been used up on yard work and projects, cleaning up and such and I finally got around to washing the car.

You could say that I am taking a well deserved breather.  The heat of summer is with us now and life in general has slowed.  I am casually looking for an electrician to guide my way through some of the electrical work, but who wants to be digging a trench in this heat?  I have almost all I need for the job.

The soffit work is just about prepared, I just have to go get some plywood to close them in and some vents for the plywood.  I want to cut them and have them painted before installing.  It won't be a big job, but it will keep the bugs out!  I am just waiting on a friend to get a few spare minutes so he can hook up his trailer and take me to the lumber store to get the plywood.

Until that happens......I am being lazy and enjoying it.  I may even go lounge in the pool with a beer.  I hope you are all having a great summer!  Don't be complaining about the heat (at least in Canada), there is no snow to shovel!

Thanks for dropping in!

Happy Canada Day, and, getting organized.

Hi there.  Just a series of photos to show how the shop is progressing.  Some of it is still temporary as I am not going to be making built in storage until after the walls are done.  I am refining where I want to put the outlets and work flow.  This is the third time arranging things, and no doubt there will be more.

The hand tool area is starting to come along.  I like that I can just take everything down and put the same back board up on the finished wall and have a place for everything.

I built a quick clamp rack and attached it to the door.  It needs improving and a bit of modification, but it gets them out of the way.  The tote on the floor is headed out for a yard sale.

The view coming in the door is getting better.

A shelf full of power tools and the sheet goods (for the walls) to the left of it.  The shelf will eventually be replaced with a cabinet.  Same with the shelf on the other side of the table.

The mitre saw, on its stand with the legs folded.  It suffered some damage and needs repairs from being out in the tent.  The cabinet holds all kinds of odds and ends.  The tote, cooler, and boxes need a better home, but stock goes over top of them when using the saw.  OK for now.  A bit of quick storage overhead from stuff I had on hand for all kinds of stuff gets it off the floor.

The jointer and planer sits nicely in the corner, the compressor is further into the corner, and some wood storage between the studs and on the floor.

A nice place for the saw, with the saw benches beside it.

So there you have it.  Much more work to do, but now I have a place to do it in.  I am waiting on a lead on an electrician and in the mean time have to close in around the door.  Then I can finish putting up the typar building paper on the outside.  I also have the eaves to do and I am thinking of just closing them in with 1/2" plywood with vents installed on it.  I will keep you posted!
